“Why do we need a new genre of storytelling?”

“As a culture we are collectively creating the building blocks of a radically new genre of storytelling.” Janet Murray’s voice-over is helping us to understand where her film is heading for: a new era.

Mrs. Murray, Georgia Tech digital media professor and storytelling author (‘Hamlet on the Holodeck’), has turned the page years ago and is focussed on multisequential story formats for the coming age, and says they will be supporting the need to stretch human capacities. Working in the field of interactive design and narratives, she uses examples from the gaming world to make clear that we are heading for a whole different ballgame. The film she constructed makes a clear point, and one we will never forget.

Knowing stories gives us humans our identity. So it makes sense that stories play a huge role in the fast developing world of gaming. Although this is not the world Triggertales is very focussed on, the visions Murray is extracting from the gaming innovations are very helpful for us in understanding what will be coming next. In ‘stretching our capacities’ as she states.

“I believe that we have reached the limit of what we can understand about the world by using unisequential formats as books, movies and tv-shows”. It is what we feel, but are having trouble to pinpoint. O yeah, do not expect to have an intellectual walk in the park when trying to connect with Janet. “Shall-we-play-a-game?”
